Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Apprenticeship

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), is a paraprofessional who works under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or other qualified professional. They provide direct, hands-on services to individuals, typically those with developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). RBTs implement behavior intervention plans designed by their supervisors to teach new skills, improve communication, and reduce challenging behaviors.

Job Tasks

RBTs are essential members of the behavior analysis team and make a significant impact in improving the quality of life for their clients and families.

  1. Implementing Behavior Plans: Following specific intervention strategies outlined by the supervising BCBA.
  2.  Data Collection: Recording detailed observations and measurements of client behaviors.
  3. Skill Development: Teaching life skills, communication, social interaction, and academic skills.
  4. Behavior Management: Applying evidence-based strategies to address challenging behaviors.
  5.  Collaborating with Families: Helping caregivers understand and support the intervention process.

Certification Requirements

To become an RBT, an individual must:

  1. Complete a 40-hour training course aligned with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) standards.
  2. Pass the RBT Competency Assessment administered by a BCBA.
  3. Successfully pass the RBT certification exam.
  4. Adhere to the BACB’s ethical code and receive ongoing supervision.

Program Structure

The RBT Apprenticeship is a 23-week training program that prepares students to sit for the Registered Behavior Technician certification exam and to gain a competitive edge in the growing field of behavior analysis. Students will complete a 40-hour RBT training curriculum alongside 4 credit-bearing courses. RBT apprentices engage in live classroom instruction and benefit from opportunities to network with RBT employers.

This program is offered as both non-credit and credit, with the potential to earn up to 14 credits. Students will enroll in coursework for 3 consecutive semesters: 

  • Semester I:
    • RBT non-credit: Registered Behavior Technician
    • BLS: Basic Life Skills
    • PTE 1010: Intro to Behavior Health Care and Wellness
  • Semester II:
    • BEH 1001: Mental Health Crisis and Intervention: Preparedness and Empathy
    • BEH 1030: Behavioral Health Clinical Case Management and Documentation
  • Semester III:
    • BEH 2030: Applied Therapeutic Communication Skills
  • Students will be ready to sit for the RBT Certification exam after successfully completing the RBT non-credit course and finishing their RBT Competency Assessment administered by a BCBA.
  • Apprentices will participate in monthly cohort sessions throughout the program. 

Admission Requirements

To be eligible to participate in this program, a student must: 

  • Attend an information session. 
  • Apply for acceptance to Arapahoe Community College
  • Attend an RBT Orientation and complete required assessments.  

Program Cost & Financial Assistance

The cost of this training program is approximately $2650, for Colorado residents eligible for the College Opportunity Fund (COF), as tuition is adjusted each academic year.

  • The cost of the program is the responsibility of the student.
  • This program is eligible for Federal Financial Aid
  • Eligible students can work with local Workforce Centers for possible tuition assistance.
