Join us for The Big Ideas Lecture Series for "The Search for the Biology of Gender" with Dr. Kelley Harmon (Psychology) on Thursday, April 2 from 6-7pm at Bemis Public Library. The Big Ideas Lecture Series brings faculty from Arapahoe Community College into the community to share fresh insights around questions connected to the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Hosted by Bemis Library, each talk is free, public, and designed to spark thought and conversation.
This talk will explore the biology of gender by looking at how the brain, body, and identity develop—sometimes in ways that don’t align neatly. Using examples from neuroscience, developmental psychology, and animal research, Dr. Kelley Harmon, Psychology faculty at ACC, examines how biological processes may help explain why gender identity often feels deeply rooted, including experiences of gender incongruence. The goal is not to reduce identity to biology, but to use science as a tool for understanding complexity, nuance, and lived experience in an accessible, interdisciplinary way.
