The Microbiology Honors Research Team spent the day in the Backcountry Wilderness Area collecting soil samples as part of an ongoing effort to address the global antibiotic resistance crisis. Students gathered diverse soil specimens with the goal of isolating novel bacteria that may exhibit multi-drug resistance when tested in the lab.

Following sample collection, smaller student research groups will focus on evaluating potential antibiotic potentiators—compounds that may increase bacterial susceptibility to existing antibiotics. By examining how these potentiators interact with resistant strains, the team aims to contribute to new strategies for combating the rise of antibiotic‑resistant infections.
