Student Learning Assistant Program
The Student Learning Assistant (SLA) Program at ACC is an innovative academic support program continuing in the Spring 2025 semester! As a partnership between Tutoring & Learning Resources and our Title III Grant, the SLA Program aims to reinforce content and provide additional support outside the classroom through peer-led learning sessions.
How the Program is Structured
Student Learning Assistants (SLAs) are peer educators who have successfully completed the course they are supporting and have been recommended by your instructor. SLAs attend class or lab with you, hold their own office hours each week in the Tutoring & Learning Resources area, and work closely with your instructor on the supported content.
You can find SLAs in some college algebra, math for liberal arts, English composition, general biology, and intro to programming courses.
How the SLA Program Differs from Regular Tutoring
The SLA Program is a unique initiative and different from regular tutoring in a number of ways:
Integration with Coursework: Unlike traditional tutoring, SLAs participate in the course(s) they support, providing insights and assistance that are directly relevant to current class topics and assignments. SLAs also develop close working relationships with the instructor of the course(s) they support, giving them a nuanced understanding of class expectations and structure.
Group Learning: The role of an SLA is to facilitate group study sessions rather than provide one-on-one tutoring. This peer-to-peer interaction fosters a collaborative learning environment where students can engage in discussions, ask questions, and solve problems together.
Focus on Specific Courses: The SLA Program targets specific courses that are critical for student success in their academic programs. By providing support in these key courses, the SLA Program helps students build a strong foundation for their future goals.
