Sat, 02/14/2015 - 8:00am - 4:00pm

Colorado Authors' LeagueThe Colorado Authors’ League will host a craft fair as part of its “Second Saturday” series on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at Arapahoe Community College.

This isn’t your typical craft fair, though.  Rather than a time to buy handmade crafts, this is an opportunity to attend intensive sessions on various aspects of the craft of writing.

Three rounds of three simultaneous breakout sessions will be held during the day-long program. Some topics will be repeated.  Expert presenters will lead programs in six important disciplines:

  • Fine-Tuning Your Writing, by BK Loren, award-winning novelist and acclaimed speaker at writing conferences and workshops
  • Elements of Good Editing, by Diane Hartman, former Auburn University instructor and long-time editor
  • Basics of Screenwriting, by Bruce Leaf, award-winning screenwriter
  • Productive Interviewing, by Norm Clarke, Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist and 2015 Damon Runyon Award recipient
  • Successful Research, by Pamela Hallaren, Arapahoe Library District research librarian
  • Improved Story Organization and Structure, by Terry Frei, author of eight fiction and non-fiction books

Advance registration is encouraged, and registrants will be asked to indicate the three subjects they most want to attend.  This will assist program planners in finalizing the schedule of sessions.  Online registration will be available beginning on Wednesday, Jan. 14.  Cost in advance is $30 for CAL members and $40 for non-members.  Cost for ACC students is $10.  All admission prices increase $10 at the door on Feb. 14.

Arapahoe Community College will once again serve as a location for the Tax Help Colorado program in 2015, as announced by The Piton Foundation and the Colorado Community College System (CCCS).

Tax Help Colorado, which is a partnership between The Piton Foundation and the CCCS, provides Colorado families with the opportunity to have their tax return prepared and e-filed by IRS-certified college students.  These services are free to Colorado taxpayers whose annual household income was less than $52,000 in 2014.

Tax Help ColoradoACC will facilitate Tax Help Colorado at its Littleton Campus (5900 S. Santa Fe Drive) each Friday from Jan. 23 - Mar. 13 in Room A1540 (first floor of the Annex Building) from Noon – 3:00 p.m.  IRS-certified ACC students will prepare and e-file these tax returns.  No appointment necessary.

WHAT TO BRING TO A PARTICIPATING TAX HELP COLORADO SITE

Furthermore, for Colorado families who have children at home and whose household income is less than $52,000, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit can reduce the amount of income tax paid and may even mean a much bigger tax refund – as much as $6,000 more.  Additionally, there are tax credits that can help to pay for college.

This is the fourth straight year that ACC has worked in conjunction with The Piton Foundation to support the Tax Help Colorado program.  The ACC site facilitated 190 combined returns for a grand total of $364,613 in Federal and State refunds during the 2014 tax season.

For more information about the Tax Help Colorado program, please visit http://www.piton.org/tax-help-colorado or call 2-1-1.
