The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) has announced the winners of its 2017 Student Design Competition.
Joan Marks, who earned her Residential Kitchen and Bath Design Specialist Certificate from Arapahoe Community College during the summer of 2017, won first place in the bath design competition.
The remodel assignment was “Smart Design for Active Seniors”; the homeowners being a retired couple who recently downsized and moved into a single-story home in Chattanooga, Tenn. The couple - still active - requested the design to allow for them to age in place. Principles of universal design were utilized to accommodate for both current and future needs, regardless of physical abilities. More than 200 entries were submitted from 26 colleges.
Marks drew inspiration for her bath design from the Walnut Street Bridge and the Veterans Bridge in Chattanooga. She also reconfigured the floor plan to accommodate wheelchairs or walkers, should the need arise in the future.
Marks received a $2,500 scholarship for her first-place design, as well as a trip to the 2018 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in January 2018.
