Sophie graduated from the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) with a M.S. degree in Pedagogy and from Metro State University of Denver with a bachelor degree in Human Performance/ Physical Education. I am also an alumnus of Arapahoe Community College

Currently, I hold certifications as a Health Fitness Specialist and Exercise is Medicine credential through the American College of Sports Medicine – the gold standard, Water Safety Instructor, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Responding to Emergencies First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogens through the American Red Cross, Water Aerobics Instructor with the Aquatic Exercise Association, Land and water based Arthritis instructor with the National Arthritis Foundation, Spinning Instructor with Johnny G Spinning and am credentialed with SilverSneakers, both land and water classes.

My passion is teaching, working and being with students at the community college level. So much satisfaction is gained when folks are given a second chance at their dream career/ education and I am in a position to help them achieve their academic and career goals. It truly is very rewarding and exciting, as well as fun in helping my students along their path of success.

On my free time I enjoy being outdoors and in the mountains cycling, training for bicycle tours, kayaking, backpacking, hiking and gardening along with group exercise classes when indoors!

Shawna RomeroShawna Romero

Shawna graduated from Arapahoe Community College with an Associates of Applied Science in Human Performance and Sport and Colorado State University with a Bachelor's degree in Organizational Leadership.

She has 6+ years in a variety of capacities which include health and wellness programs in Denver Public Schools, the YMCA, Air Force, Reebok Foundation/BOKS, Anthem Blue Cross and Shield and Arapahoe Community College. She provided personal training, group exercise, adjunct, Fitness Director, Outreach Coordinator and as a Health Fitness Specialist. She also enjoys volunteering as a Soccer Coach with the YMCA.

Currently, she holds certifications as ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist, Fit Wall Instructor, Military Exercise Instructor and CPR-PR/AED.

Her hobbies include cycling, running, eating wholesome food, family time, cooking, traveling and being outdoors.

Shawna is ecstatic and humbled about this opportunity to teach at ACC. Her long time goal of returning to ACC as Adjunct is surreal. She is passionate about the learning process and excited to help her students succeed in the classroom!
