Types of Aid: Work Study
2007-2008 Work Study Program

Work Study open positions

Work study is available to students who are eligible for Title IV Federal student aid. Students are employed during an award year and can work up to 20 hours per week. To the extent practical, ACC will attempt to provide employment that compliments and reinforces the educational and vocational career goals of the student. Student earnings are restricted to the amount of their award. Work study awards are available to students who are enrolled in at least half-time, and maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA or higher.

Although many students qualify for work study, a work study award is not offered to all eligible students because funding is limited. The work study appointment is temporary and only guaranteed for one academic year. You may view job postings at www.arapahoe.edu or visit the job board in front of Financial Aid Office (M2115) for the large variety of positions that are available throughout the school.

Work Study Orientation

Students who have been awarded work study funds must attend an orientation and completed new hire paperwork prior to the first day of work. Students may stop by the Financial Aid Office (M2115) and sign up for the date and time that is convenient for them. Visit this link for the listed 2008-2009 academic year orientation schedule.

Work Study Objectives

  • To assist students in meeting educational costs.
  • To the maximum extent possible, provide jobs that complement and reinforce the student’s educational program or career goals.
  • To regulate employment conditions, including pay, that is appropriate and reasonable according to the type of work performed.

Hourly Wage Information

Your hourly wage is directly related to the category that your job description falls under. These categories are set up as a guide only. The pay rates vary from department to department; therefore, you need to contact the supervisor directly for the pay range associated with a particular job. The three job categories are:

Student Aid 1
Student Aid 2
Security/ financial/special

Student Aid 1 – work study positions are paid an hourly rate of $7.02 - $9.00 per hour. Examples of jobs that fall in this category are general office assistants, child care aides, custodians, and food service workers. These jobs generally need no prior training and no special skills to perform the job.

Student Aid 2 – work study positions are paid an hourly rate of $9.00 - $11.00 per hour. Examples of jobs that fall under this category are data entry clerks, computer assistants, art studio assistants, grounds and maintenance workers, lab and research assistants, library aides, tutors, child care program assistants and any other job that will need some specialized skills.

Security/Financial/Special – work study positions are paid $11.00 and up per hour. Examples of jobs that fall in this category are cash handlers, security assistants, ID system employees, disability service aides, special academic aides dealing with personal information of students, network and web page support staff and any other job that will require prior training, background checks and specialized skills.

All positions require one year of employment in the same job before eligible for a raise. At this point, after an evaluation by the supervisor, a student employee may be eligible for a .50 per hour raise.

New Hire Paperwork

Work Study employees must complete the following paperwork prior to the first day of work.

  1. Work Study Appointment Form: This form must be completed by the student, direct supervisor, Human Resources Office, and returned to the Financial Aid Office prior to the student’s first day of work. This form is required every academic year for all work study employees.
  2. Emergency Information
  3. W-4: The Human Resources Office requires a new, original W-4 for each new hire.
  4. I-9: As mandated by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of November 6, 1986, the Human Resources Office is required to verify the identity and work eligibility of all employees. The supervisor must verify employment eligibility and attach the I-9 to the Work Study Appointment Form for every new hire. Also, photocopies of the documents used for the I-9 verification must be attached. Employees will not be placed on the Arapahoe Community College payroll until this paperwork is completed.
  5. Direct Deposit: All employees of Arapahoe Community College are required to have their payroll checks direct deposited. You will be required to have a blank deposit slip, complete with a routing number, when you are hired. The first payment will be a check mailed to the home address. A notice will be sent to verify the bank information provided for the direct deposit. For any changes, please contact the Payroll Office at 303.797.5769.
  6. Confidentiality Statement: Supervisors are encouraged to require work study employees to sign a confidentiality statement, but it is not required by our office.

Payroll

As a work study recipient you will be paid bi-weekly (every two weeks). Timesheets are provided to your supervisor by the payroll department. You must sign and date these at the end of the two-week pay period. Failure to sign your timesheet will result on a delay in your pay. Your supervisor will check your timesheet, sign and date it and turn it in to the Payroll department. Please be advised that all work study awards are based upon the availability of funds and may be revised during the school year without prior notice. In that event your supervisor will be notified. If an award is revised every reasonable effort will be made to assist a student for the remainder of the school year, if funds are available in the department budget.
