Upcoming ACC Events Include Honoring Veterans
(October 24, 2007 - Littleton, Colo.) Arapahoe Community College invites all members of the armed forces, past and present, and their families to take part in a two-day commemoration of Veterans Day, November 12 and 13. Activities for veterans and their family members on both days include: "A Salute to Veterans" photo display; information dissemination on how to find help for veterans; and a card-sending activity to thank a veteran. On November 12, the college will hold a "Veterans Day Ceremony," at 11 a.m. with special involvement by the Littleton Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter (post 4666).
So ACC may create a rich photo display, the public is asked to submit photos of themselves or loved ones who are veterans to ACC by November 6. These photos will form a montage which will be on display in ACC's Student Lounge on November 12 and 13. Submitted photos may be copies but must be 5x7 or smaller. Photos should be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs in the Main Building of ACC at 5900 South Santa Fe Drive in Littleton.
Also as part of this commemoration on November 13, ACC will present World War II veteran Paul Murphy. Murphy will speak of his experience as a survivor of the largest disaster at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy. After delivering the world's first operational atomic bomb to the south Pacific in July 1945, the U.S.S. Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Of 1,196 aboard, only 316 survived the attack and the ensuing four days on the open sea, in shark-infested waters, without food or drinkable water, before they were finally found. Mr. Murphy is scheduled to speak at 4:30 p.m. on November 13 in Waring Theatre in the Main Building of ACC.
