Law and Ethics for Health Professions Course Coming to Parker
Course Open to High School Students

(November 12, 2007 - Littleton, Colo.) Arapahoe Community College (ACC) will offer a two-credit course in "Law and Ethics for Health Professions" this January. The course is open to high school students, 16 and older, and to adults interested in a medical career or degree program. The course will be taught on Wednesday evenings at the University Center at Chaparral, 15653 Brookstone Drive in western Parker (three miles East of I-25 and Lincoln Avenue).

An information session for students and/or their parents, who are interested in this opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school, will be held on Monday, November 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The session will take place in Room A2120 of Arapahoe Community College Main Building Annex in Littleton at 5900 South Santa Fe Drive.

ACC's Director of Health Careers Development, Sue Treitz says, "This course will be beneficial for anyone wanting to study medical career issues to learn appropriate responses when confronted with a variety of ethical issues in health care." Treitz continues, "Ethical decision-making is a complex task involving facts, concepts, basic principles and people. This course is designed to assist the student in making wise decisions via critical thinking as a member of a health care team." Treitz says that ethical dilemmas in health care can range from which patient should get an available heart to whether a patient's life support should be discontinued. She expects the course will be filled with lively discussions about the ethical challenges healthcare workers face on a daily basis.

Treitz says that the opportunity exists for high school students to simultaneously satisfy requirements for their diploma while earning the college credit the course provides. She urges any student interested in this option to visit with their counselor. For more information, contact Treitz at 303.797.5962.
