ACC LIBRARIANS TO INTRODUCE PUBLIC TO POWERFUL RESEARCH TOOLS

(August 24, 2007 - Littleton, Colo.) Arapahoe Community College's Weber Center for Learning Resources (ACC's library) is holding a series of 15 free one-hour long lunchtime "Topical Research Classes." Topical research delves into timely matters that affect most Americans. The classes, which are open to the public, will be offered every Thursday at noon from August 30 through December 13. The Weber Center is located on the second floor of ACC's Main building at 5900 S. Santa Fe Drive in Littleton.

"Any community member can attend, without having to register at the college, any of these classes which will feature professional librarians showing you 'how to' conduct research within a different discipline each week," says ACC Librarian Ann Priestman. Disciplines to be covered include: science, nutrition, business, literature, art, paralegal, automotive, humanities, finance, history, philosophy, math and travel.

"Particular 'hot' topics will be developed as examples but attendees are encouraged to bring questions and areas of interest to explore," explained Priestman. Attendees are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch and gather at the Reference Desk at the start of class.

Upcoming sessions include: August 30, Competitive intelligence; September 6, Nutrition; September 13, Global warming; September 20 Finding book reviews; September 27, Interior Design periods and styles; October 4, How to find legal data; October 11, What's wrong with my car?; October 18, How to get published; October 25, Finding investment data; November 1, Global economy research; November 8, Immigration; November 15, Bio ethics; November 29, Fear of math; December 6, Starting a small business; and, December 13, Finding travel bargains. According to Priestman, many of the business, finance and paralegal sessions will be useful to small business entrepreneurs and other professionals.

"Anyone in the community may join us for any or all of the sessions," remarked Priestman. "If someone can't make the specified time, we invite them to stop by our reference desk at any time and we'll be happy to give them an individual session."

"Many people aren't aware that our library is a public library and offers a plethora of powerful research tools," said Priestman. "Through these classes attendees will learn how to use these tools to conduct sound research." The research tools include: OPAC, ACC's Online Public Access Catalog, including the new AquaBrowser feature; ProQuest, an index to 2,000 journals, including many full text with an ability to search peer reviewed journals; EBSCOhost, six databases with an index to more than 6,000 journals, including Academic, Business, Regional Business, and more; NewsBank, a full-text Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News, New York Times and regional newspapers; Statistical Universe, statistics from the Federal Government, United Nations, World Bank, IMF, and others; Encyclopedia Britannica Online, articles, Web sites and other quality resources; OCLC FirstSearch, over 40 subject databases and 100 full-text journals; CQResearcher: Comprehensive reporting and analysis on issues in the news; Fact on File, a service that provides access to Issues and Controversies, an in-depth investigation of today's top issues and Today's Science, news written especially for students; and, NetLibrary, a repository of 7,200 electronic books.
