Public Invited to Elder Law Demystified
(March 29, 2007 – Littleton, Colo.) On April 17, “The People’s Law School,” (PLS) a collaborative project between the Arapahoe County Bar Association (ACBA) and Arapahoe Community College’s Paralegal Program presents Elder Law Demystified. The seminar starts at 6:30 p.m. at ACC’s main campus located at 5900 S. Santa Fe Drive in Littleton. The seminar is free, open to the public and will be held in the College’s Half Moon room.
“The People’s Law School,” is harnessing the resources of the 1,100-member ACBA and ACC’s Paralegal Associate of Applied/Certificate Program to produce a series of free educational legal seminars for the public. PLS faculty is made up of practicing lawyers in a myriad of topical fields being examined during the series. Elder law is an area of legal practice that emphasizes those issues that affect America’s growing population of seniors including: estate planning/administration, long-term care issues (e.g., Medicaid and disability) and commitment matters such as guardianship and conservatorship. Other elder law issues include: estate planning, wills, trusts elder abuse, neglect, fraud, retirement planning, Social Security benefits, consumer protection, nursing homes, in-home care, powers of attorney, medical care directives, mortgage issues, discrimination and tax issues.
PLS faculty for Elder Law Demystified include ACBA members: Virginia Horton of the Arapahoe County Attorney’s Office, who handles adult protection cases; Eighteenth Judicial District Public Administrator Tamra Palmer of Palmer Goertzel and Associates, who also has an LLM in taxation and practices in the areas estate planning and probate administration; and, Joann Rupprecht, an elder law practitioner and member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. ACBA Executive Director Angel McCall, who is a Certified Financial Planner, will round out the panel of presenters. ACBA President-Elect David Stevens, who is “Dean” of the PLS, will moderate the event.
Stevens explains, "This program will be informative to anyone who is elderly, cares for the elderly or wants to responsibly plan for their later years." “We’re very excited to host this very helpful and practical seminar at ACC,” adds Mary Peoples, ACC's Paralegal Program Coordinator.
