ACC Interior Design Students Win
First Place Award at Unique Fashion Contest
(June 15, 2007 - Littleton, Colo.) Can you imagine wearing clothes made of products produced by interior finishing manufacturers such as: MDC Wallcovering, Advanced Flooring Solutions and ICI Paint? Making apparel out of floor coverings was just what propelled an Arapahoe Community College Interior Design student team toward winning a first place award at the third annual "Prêt-a-Porter: Finish Meets Fashion Runway Show." ACC's team included: ACC Interior Design Chair David Lafont; Team Captain Neijla Hebert (who modeled the garments made out of flooring products); Christopher Shields; Genny McKenna; Susie McKenzie; Gala Stude; Sian Rowlands; and, Linda Christy.
"Prêt-a-Porter" is a very unique competition that was held last month (May 18) at Denver's Mile High Station. In this contest presented by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), ACC students competed against interior designers from some of Denver's top firms and schools. All of the teams in the competition were assigned different interior finishing companies to pull their materials from to create the most wearable fashionable design. The materials included but were not limited to: interior lighting, paint chips, carpet, vinyl and tile. IIDA created the "Prêt-a-Porter" competition to show the public that the Interior Design community is an innovative and artistic group that can do anything, with any materials at hand, to create beauty in and out of the home.
Forty teams competed in this year's "Prêt-a-Porter. " The Arapahoe Community College Interior Design students earned the First Prize for the Student Division by creating an ensemble they dubbed "Iconic Elegance." The "Iconic Elegance" concept sought to recreate the style of sophistication and class made famous by 1960s icon Audrey Hepburn. The ACC students accomplished this by creating a hat, gloves and skirt out plynlyl flooring; crafting a skirt trim out of shag berber carpet; developing a top out plynl flooring and floor rated glass tile and complimenting the ensemble with accessories made out floor rated glass tile and linoleum. After crafting the pieces, a team member was then selected to model the "elegant" ensemble on the "Prêt-a-Porter" high fashion cat-walk. As an additional honor, ACC's winning entry was showcased at Denver's Access and DWR galleries in late May and early June.
