Arapahoe Community College Turns to Students to Help Students

Fall Semester ACC Peer Mentors/Tutors Mark Swezy (left), 49, and Devon Shenleman (right), 20,
discuss the features of a new tutoring software package.
(April 1, 2007 – Littleton, Colo.) “Arapahoe Community College has a valuable resource here on campus,” remarks ACC’s Coordinator of Tutorial Services Debra Goldberg. “ It’s our own students!”
This semester, Goldberg says, “We’re turning to sixteen talented students to staff ACC’s new Peer Mentoring and Tutoring Center.” Now in its second semester, the Center offers a variety of assistance to help students succeed. These student mentors who staff the center understand how difficult college life can be and want to help others avoid some of the struggles that all students face. Whether it is proper time management, how to become better organized, where to find certain offices, or ways to communicate with their instructors, the Peer Center aims to provide a welcoming environment in which students feel comfortable sharing their concerns.
In addition, ACC’s peer tutors have excelled in many ACC courses and can guide students to more effective study strategies and better test-taking techniques. From math/accounting/business classes to sciences and languages, the peer staff is well equipped to handle academic issues. Also available is free, online, self-paced tutoring software for building basic reading, vocabulary, writing, and math skills.
Located on the second floor of ACC’s Main Building in Littleton just beyond Starbucks in Room M2410, the Peer Mentoring and Tutoring Center is open 40 hours each week including Friday and Saturday mornings. No appointments are needed, and students can check the schedule on the bulletin board outside the office to see which mentor/tutor could best serve their needs. To contact the Center, call 303.797.5669.
