LITTLETON, Colo. (March 14, 2014) - Arapahoe Community College's Sigma Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society has received “Five Star Chapter” recognition for the 2013-14 school year, as announced during the Phi Theta Kappa Colorado Regional Convention on Friday and Saturday, March 7-8, at the Front Range Community College Larimer Campus in Fort Collins.
Sigma Phi also earned the 2013 Honors in Action distinguished theme award for its “Theme 7 (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) – The Culture of Competition” project, which focused on the federal government’s policy on funding scientific research and how it translates to economic growth. Sigma Phi’s project was also awarded second place overall (all themes) for the Colorado Region.
Sigma Phi students who attended included (pictured from left): Jordan Vigil (Chairman of Membership Affairs), Alfonso Olguin, John Whatley (President) and Cole Pace (Vice President of Honors in Action). Whatley is currently running for Phi Theta Kappa’s Colorado Region Vice President of Communications.
Phi Theta Kappa's Five Star Chapter development plan serves as a blueprint for developing strong chapters, improving student engagement on campus and recognizing progress in the attainment of goals set by the chapter. Using the Five Star plan as a guide, chapters enhance their strategies to recognize eligible students, provide significant personal and professional development opportunities for members (through Honors in Action), and build a working relationship with college administration by becoming active on campus and in the community. As chapters reach these milestones, they progress through each level of the Five Star plan, ultimately reaching the pinnacle Five Star level.
Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society for two-year colleges, is the largest honor society in American higher education. The Sigma Phi Chapter at ACC was chartered in 1968 and has inducted more than 3,600 members since its inception. Sigma Phi has retained its “Five Star Chapter” status for over 16 years. Dr. Fida Obeidi and Heather Wilcox serve as the Sigma Phi Chapter co-advisors at ACC.
