ACC Student Named Coca-Cola New Century Scholar

(March 23, 2011 – Littleton, Colorado) - Arapahoe Community College (ACC) student Lisa Hardman was recently named the Colorado Coca-Cola New Century Scholar by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and the Coca-Cola Foundation. Selection was based on her score earned in the All-USA Community College Academic Team competition, which included more than 1,600 applications this year.

As a Coca-Cola New Century Scholar, Hardman will be presented with a $2,000 scholarship and plaque.  Hardman’s name and the College will also be listed in the April 11 issue of USA Today featuring the Coca-Cola New Century Scholars.

In March, Hardman, a Phi Theta Kappa member, was recognized at a ceremony in Denver for being selected to join the Phi Theta Kappa All-Colorado Academic Team. The selection was based on her academic achievement, leadership and community service.

“Lisa is a delightful and amazing student,” said Dr. Erica Hastert, faculty advisor for ACC’s Phi Theta Kappa’s Honors Program Committee. “Her creativity and passion for her writing and education are inspiring. That creativity and passion even shines through outside of the classroom in her interpretive dancing.”

Hardman, 42, is currently pursuing her Associate degree in creative writing at ACC. She also serves as vice president of scholarship for ACC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter. Upon completion of her degree in May, Hardman plans to transfer to the University of Colorado at Denver to pursue her bachelor’s degree in English/creative writing.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,250 chapters on college campuses. The ACC Sigma Phi chapter received Colorado’s Most Distinguished Chapter in 2009 and 2010 and Colorado’s Distinguished Officer Team awards in 2011 in addition to a number of other regional hallmark and officer awards.

A New Century Scholars Reception and Program will be held during the American Association of Community Colleges Convention on April 11 in New Orleans.
