Pharmacy Technician Program: Synopsis
of Course Descriptions

Pharmacy Technician
Three five-week modules plus two four-week internships.
Module 1:
PHT 111 Orientation to Pharmacy--2 Credits
This course introduces students to the work of pharmacy technicians
and the context in which the work is performed. Students will learn
the concept of pharmaceutical care and the technician’s general
role in its delivery.
PHT 113 Pharmacy Calculations and Terminology--1 Credit
This course will provide the pharmacy technician with analytical
skills to read, decode, and process a variety of prescriptions requiring
mathematical computation.
PHT 117 Communication for Pharmacy Technicians--1 Credit
Students learn to communicate in a clear, logical manner at the
appropriate level when performing the job responsibilities of a
pharmacy technician.
Module 2:
PHT 112 Pharmacy Law--2 Credits
This course introduces students to the federal and state laws and
regulations that govern the preparation and dispensing of pharmaceuticals.
PHT 115 Pharmacology of the GI, renal, reproductive, immune, dermatologic
and hematologic systems--3 Credits
This course will present the basic concepts of drug action, mechanisms
of action, and pathophysiology of diseases and disorders. Focus
will be on the how and why drugs work and clinical aspects of pharmacotherapy.
PHT 116 Institutional Pharmacy--3 Credits
This course will give students exposure to the unique aspects of
hospital/home health care pharmacy practice. Students learn the
proper method of receiving a prescription order, methods for distributing
medications, and techniques for preparing sterile products.
This is a laboratory course with twice weekly classes on campus
at ACC.
Module 3:
PHT 118 Pharmacology of the nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular,
respiratory, and
musculoskeletal systems--3 Credits
This course will present the basic concepts of normal body function
and the changes caused by diseases or disorders. The student will
learn the basic concepts of pharmacology, the pathophysiology of
diseases and disorders, and the therapeutics of drugs for these
systems.
PHT 119 Community Pharmacy--3 Credits
Students will learn to receive, screen, and decode written medication
prescriptions. Students are taught various skills in prescription
preparation, counting and pouring, and labeling the finished medication
package for delivery. The business aspects of pharmacy are covered.
This is a laboratory course with twice weekly classes on campus
at ACC.
Internships:
PHT 170 Institutional Pharmacy Practice--4 Credits
This course is designed to provide students with hands-on experience
in an inpatient hospital, long-term care, or hospice pharmacy setting.
Students must complete all didactic course work prior to enrolling
for this course. The course involves a minimum of 152 hours of on-the-job
work experience. Each student is required to work under the supervision
of a licensed pharmacist (i.e. Preceptor) or representative. At
the clinical site, students are expected to participate in numerous
pharmacy practice activities.
PHT 171 Community Pharmacy Practice--4 Credits
This course is designed to provide students with hands-on experience
in a community pharmacy setting. Students must complete all didactic
course work prior to enrolling for this course. The course involves
a minimum of 152 hours of on-the-job work experience. Each student
is required to work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist
(i.e. Preceptor) or representative. At the community pharmacy site,
students are expected to participate in a number of pharmacy practice
activities.
