Important Program Information: Nurse Aide Program

Students must apply to COF to be eligible for State tuition stipend.

Students will need a picture ID badge with “Nurse Aide” designation available at Campus Police. Room M2600

This program does not carry a waitlist.

Program Information and Prerequisites:
A mandatory orientation will be held for all Nurse Aide students prior to the first day of classes. Check the semester schedule for date, time, and room. Program information including uniforms and clinical placement requirements will be addressed at this meeting. All students are asked to activate their College e-mail account to receive important information.

PREREQUISISTES and COREQUIREMENTS:

  • NUA 170 is a co-requisite of NUA 101
  • NUA 170 is a co- requisite of NUA 171

PRE-REQUISITES for NUA 170

  • A Criminal Background Check must be complete through ACC prior to clinical placement.
  • Current CPR card - MUST BE Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association (303.980.1015 or www.americanheart.org). No other CPR will be accepted.
  • Immunizations:
    • A negative TB test or documentation of negative chest x-ray MUST be within the last year and cover the length of the course.
    • Hepatitis B vaccination – two of the three injections are required for clinical placement. A titer documenting immunity is also acceptable
    • Documentation of 2 MMR vaccines or a titer documenting immunity.
    • Chicken Pox vaccine, a titer, or documentation of disease by a healthcare professional is acceptable.
    • Flu shots are highly recommended

NOTE: Copies of immunizations and current CPR card are due prior to any clinical assignment. A deadline date will be given on the first day of class. Individuals interested in this program are encouraged to begin prerequisites as soon as possible. There is a one month wait between some immunizations, so it is imperative that interested students plan enough time to have all immunizations up to date by week 5 of the NUA 101 course.

Students may not progress to the clinical courses without proper documentation of the listed prerequisites by the required deadline. Documentation must be submitted as one stapled packet to the course Instructor after classes begin.

LENGTH OF PROGRAM:
This is a one-semester part-time program. Classes are offered each semester. (See semester schedule for times, dates and room) Lecture/lab is scheduled for the first 9 weeks of the semester. The clinical courses will begin at approximately week six (6) of the semester and will span the remainder of the semester. Students in the Hybrid sections should access information about online learning from the College Web site http://www.arapahoe.edu/online/index.html.

  • Hybrid section (301): This section is a combination of Web-based learning and college lab time. The student must have access to a computer and e-mail in order to register for this section. Students must plan to attend class at the computer beginning the first day of the semester in order to prepare for the first lab. Labs will be held on campus Fridays and are a mandatory portion of the program. Students enrolling in this section should register for section 501or 701 for NUA 170 and NUA 171.
  • Evening section (102): This section is held two evenings per week from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. The first class of each week is devoted to theory and the second class consists of hands-on skills in the lab. Students enrolling in this section should register for section 502 or 702 for NUA 170 and NUA 171.
  • Weekend section (303): This section is a combination of Web-based learning and college lab time. The student must have access to a computer and e-mail in order to register for this section. Students must plan to attend class at the computer beginning the first day of the semester in order to prepare for the first lab. Labs will be held on campus one day per week and are a mandatory portion of the program. Students enrolling in this section should register for section 503 or 703 for NUA 170 and NUA 171. Clinical courses are scheduled on Saturdays and/or Sundays and will begin approximately week six (6) of the semester.

CLINICAL COURSES (NUA 170 and NUA 171):
Register for the clinical section that corresponds to the lecture section for which you registered. Weekend clinical courses are reserved for the weekend section only (503).
All required documentation must be on file in the office of the Program Director prior to any clinical placement. Clinical placement consists of nine 8-hour days (NUA 170 & NUA 171) and will consist of 3 days in acute care, 3 days in long term care and 3 days in hospice care. Clinical assignments will be distributed the first week of class. Assignments are based on facility availability. Clinical courses will begin approximately six (6) weeks into the semester. The program is unable to honor special requests for clinical assignments.

CERTIFICATION:
This program has been approved by the State Board of Nursing as meeting and exceeding the training requirements as stated in the Federal Law governing Nurse Aide education. Upon completion, the student will qualify for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) plan. Practice exams (both written and manual skills) are given as a part of the program on the last day of class. This class is a mandatory portion of the program. The application process will be reviewed with students during this class. The complete certification process may take up to two weeks. Notification for eligibility to test is from PearsonVue. A list of testing sites is also available from the PearsonVue Web site. Students are encouraged to access the PearsonVue Web site at www.pearsonvue.com.

ADDITIONAL FEES:

  • CPR – approximately $50.00. See above.
  • Uniforms- approximately $25.00/set (Uniform requirements will be discussed at the Mandatory Orientation)
  • Stethoscope
  • Gait Belt
  • Any deficient immunizations
  • Certification Exam – Cost is $95.00 to be paid at the end of the course by cashier's check or money order to PearsonVue. Personal checks are not accepted.
