Once the employer decides to offer an apprenticeship, the company
needs to become a registered apprenticeship site and needs to register
the apprentice with the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training (BAT).
Becoming a Registered Apprenticeship Site
Employer must do the following to define the expectations and requirements
of the apprenticeship:
- Customize the "Standards of Apprenticeship" document (signed
by the employer and BAT)
- Customize the on-the-job training plan (7220 hours distributed
over all the training areas)
- Customize the academic instruction (576 clock hours minimum)
- Customize the pay scale (yearly or half-yearly increases)
Registering the Apprentice
Employer must do the following:
- Give credit for previous work experience, if applicable (maximum
of 5415 hours)
- Give credit for previous academic instruction (maximum of 75%
of required instruction)
- Fill out the "Apprenticeship Agreement" (signed by the employer
and the apprentice)
During the apprenticeship a monthly training record and the "Apprentice
Master Records" are kept. Performance reviews take place at the
times of pay scale raises.
At the end of the apprenticeship the employer notifies BAT, and
a "Certificate of Completion of the Apprenticeship" will be issued
to the apprentice.
