Welcome to the Criminal Justice Education Program at Arapahoe Community College!

Our Program

Our program curriculum is strong and diverse and provides you with an excellent opportunity to see the criminal justice system as it actually functions, not how television portrays it. Beginning with CRJ 110, Introduction to Criminal Justice, students survey the criminal justice system, examine how the system works, and how different agencies work and interact. Plus, students begin to study controversial issues such as the death penalty.

As you further your educational program, you will be challenged to expand and clarify your understanding of criminal law and procedure, law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, and corrections. Our program wraps up with CRJ 230, Criminology, which builds upon, and ties together, everything students have learned as they look at larger systemic and societal issues.

Degree Options

Our program offers you the flexibility of two degree options: the Associate of Applied Science Degree and the Associate of General Studies. Both with enhance your career options. If you choose, your education at ACC can be transferred efficiently to many bachelor’s degree programs throughout the state, including Metropolitan State College of Denver. Be sure to consult with Department Chair Christine Swenson early in your education career so that the transfer program and specific electives can be met without difficulty.

To schedule an appointment, call the Criminal Justice Program office at 303.797.5793 or 303.797.5980. For information about your plans to transfer to a four–year college, see the General Studies Core Curriculum Transfer Courses in ACC’s catalog.

Take a minute to review our advising sheets. These can provide you with some information about what is expected within each degree program.

Criminal Justice and schedule flexibility

Understanding that busy adults may have difficulty completing their education with courses scheduled during the day, we have responded to this need by offering more classes online. These courses are more intense because you are completing the same amount of work as a 15-week course, but in much less time, either 5 or 10 weeks in length. These formats enable students to fit their education around their work and home life. But even though the course is online, there is interaction with the instructor and other students so students do not feel isolated.

Dedicated Instructors

Our instructors are professionals in the field and have decades of experience. Whether they are retired or still engaged in the system, their experiences assist you as you gain more insight into how the criminal justice system works, in theory and in practical application. Our instructors will challenge the stereotypes and misconceptions often held by the general public. As you develop your abilities to write and think analytically, you will set yourself apart from the crowd, whether you seek a career in the field immediately or you choose to transfer to a four–year institution.

Our Instructional Methods

The Criminal Justice Program offers a variety of instructional methods which provide you flexibility and the opportunity to excel in this competitive field.

Traditional Classes:

  • All class sessions meet regularly with the instructor.
  • This format allows for the maximum amount of student–teacher and student–student interaction.
  • As a result, individualized assistance is regularly available to students.

Hybrid Classes:

  • This format consists of some class meetings with the instructor, and some part taught online, using Bb Vista (Web CT), guided by your instructor.
  • Combines ability to interact directly with the instructor, plus flexibility to take online portions.
  • However, these courses are not self-paced or self-study. There are assignments and deadlines.

Online Classes:

  • The entire course is available ONLY online using Bb Vista (WebCT). While there are no class meetings, your course will be guided by your instructor.
  • This type of class offers maximum flexibility. You can complete coursework at times to fit your work or family obligations. However, just like hybrid courses, assignment deadlines apply.

A notes about hybrid and online courses: These instructional methods provide students with the ultimate amount of flexibility and responsibility; students will need to maintain a high level of self–motivation and organization in order to thrive in these educational settings. To facilitate a successful learning experience, students should feel comfortable using a computer, the Internet, and electronic mail (including downloading and uploading documents). While Bb Vista (WebCT) is fairly user–friendly and intuitive, if you do not have experience using it, you are strongly encouraged to take the time to attend a free orientation session. The Schedule of Classes has the dates, times and location(s) of these training sessions.
