Accounting Home | Course Sequence | Faculty | Course Handouts | FAQs

  1. What is Accounting?
Accounting is the means by which financial status of a company is monitored. Accounting systematically records, classifies, reports and interprets financial activity of an organization.

  2. What is the difference between ACC 101 and ACC 121?
ACC 101 is a course designed to give students an understanding of the basic bookkeeping cycle. It does not prepare the student to continue with the second semester of Accounting (ACC122). It is encouraged within a program of study where bookkeeping responsibilities might be assigned as part of the overall job responsibilities, such as: administrative assistant, office receptionist, office clerk.

ACC 121 is the course designed as the starting point for the A.A.S. Degree in Accounting. The course takes the student through the bookkeeping cycle and continues, in more depth, into specific theory and concepts of accounting. It is the prerequisite to ACC 122. The course is transferable to most major colleges and universities in the state.

  3. I work during the day; can I complete the degree at night?
Yes, the Accounting Department offers both day and night courses Monday through Thursday to accommodate both full and part time students. Many courses are also offered in alternative delivery format, such as: fast track, hybrid, online and self-paced.

  4. What job opportunities are available?
Within the accounting profession, an individual has several options. Both industry and government offer a broad spectrum of accounting opportunities. An individual may choose a career from full-charge bookkeeping to specializing in payroll accounting, managerial accounting, cost accounting or income tax preparation.

  5. How long will it take me to complete the program?
Generally speaking, the A.A.S. degree in Accounting will take two years to complete if attending as a full-time student.

  6. What does the Accounting Program feature?
The program provides students with instruction in specialized accounting areas such as income tax, payroll and cost accounting. It integrates the use of technology in all accounting courses, and includes courses in economics, finance and law.

  7. What are the requirements for becoming a C.P.A.?
Most accounting courses offered by ACC can be used to fulfill the course work requirements for obtaining certification. However, to become a Certified Public Accountant, you need a four-year degree, completion of a specific number of hours of accounting/business course work, passing a four part exam and work experience. To find out more about requirements to be licensed in the state of Colorado, contact the Colorado State Board of Accountancy.
