Writers Studio Spring Classes
Ahh, the dark afternoons and evenings of winter are upon us! Once again, Writers Studio is offering creative writing workshops for ACC registered students and for noncredit students registered through ACC's Community Ed program.
Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, anyone?
ENG 222: Creative Writing II illuminates the creative process from new angles, exploring the complex relationships between writers, readers, and the material that is their currency. This is a course for fiction writers, essayists, and poets who take their work seriously and seek insightful, informed criticism. Discussions and workshops will sharpen the writer's command of language, tone, and detail, and will hone the ability to revise original work to meet the standards acceptable for publication. Wednesdays, 2:30-5:15 p.m. for information and required books, contact matt.bowen@arapahoe.edu.
ENG 227 Poetry Writing: Sing to the Muse.Learn the language of the lyric, narrative, and metaphoric. Explore an experiment with classic and modern forms of poetry. Discover significant past and present poets, and literary movements in poetry. Workshop format with peer critiques and presentations. Details through Kathryn Winograd at kathryn.winograd@arapahoe.edu. Meets Wednesdays starting January 20, 5:30 p.m.-8:15 p.m.

Celebrate a new book release with Chris Ransick, Denver Poet Laureate
Dear Friends: Burn off your mid-week stress, have a drink, and join me in celebrating the release of my new book, Asleep Beneath the Hill of Dreams. WHEN: Nov. 10, 6:30-8:00 p.m. WHERE: The Meadowlark, 27th & Larimer, Denver.
I hope to see you there. I know some of you are far from the Rockies, but I thought I'd let you know the book is available. E-mail me directly at this address or contact my publisher, Ghost Road Press, for ordering information. Both I and my press are independent operators; you won't find this book, or poetry in general, available at major chain bookstores. Help support the art, the poets, and small press publishers everywhere by buying direct.
Cheers, Chris Ransick, Denver Poet Laureate
"Following Richard Hugo as much as John Wesley Powell, Chris Ransick is an exacting cartographer of the West's vast landscapes, physical and emotional, rendering them with such care you will agree with him. "This is where/ you have always lived, no matter what they say." -- Jake Adam York author of Murder Ballads

ACC Great American Smokeout Essay Contest. Deadline November 11. ACC Student Services presents a writing contest for students to share stories of how their lives have been affected by tobacco. Perhaps they've lost a loved one or close friend; or fought the battle of addiction for years, with little success. An independent panel has been created to judge the submissions and the winner, chosen from all valid entries, will receive not just the customary gift card, but also a chance to see their writing in print. We will post a link to the winning submission on the ACC homepage, as well as have the letter printed in our ACC school newspaper, the Arapahoe Avenue: The Road to the News. The essay must be 1,000 words or less and the deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11. Please contact Matt Bowen at matt.bowen@arapahoe.edu for details.
