CHI 111 – Chinese Language I – 5 credits

  • Prerequisite: None
  • Required Materials: Integrated Chinese Level 1, Part 1Simplified characters characters – Textbook, Workbook/ Lab manual and Audio CDs.
  • Course Objectives:
    1. To provide the student with the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge of Chinese grammar and syntax.
    2. To provide practice in basic aural, oral, reading and writing skills.
    3. To provide practice in simple translations (English/Chinese – Chinese/English).
    4. To provide the opportunity to learn about the culture of China and its relationship to the American culture and to the world.
  • Students Competencies: Upon completion of this course (novice level) the student should be able to:
    1. Reproduce comprehensibly the pronunciation and intonation of Chinese
    2. Understand basic oral statements, instructions and questions.
    3. Apply accurately vocabulary and learned phrases in simple oral expressions.
    4. Demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary and grammar in basic conversations.
    5. Employ comprehensible grammar in writing simple sentences and paragraphs.
    6. Read and comprehend basic information, short articles and simple written selections.
    7. Identify geographical locations where Chinese is spoken and the various aspects of Chinese culture.
