CHI 111 – Chinese Language I – 5 credits
- Prerequisite: None
- Required Materials: Integrated Chinese Level 1, Part 1 – Simplified characters characters – Textbook, Workbook/ Lab manual and Audio CDs.
- Course Objectives:
- To provide the student with the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge of Chinese grammar and syntax.
- To provide practice in basic aural, oral, reading and writing skills.
- To provide practice in simple translations (English/Chinese – Chinese/English).
- To provide the opportunity to learn about the culture of China and its relationship to the American culture and to the world.
- Students Competencies: Upon completion of this course (novice level) the student should be able to:
- Reproduce comprehensibly the pronunciation and intonation of Chinese
- Understand basic oral statements, instructions and questions.
- Apply accurately vocabulary and learned phrases in simple oral expressions.
- Demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary and grammar in basic conversations.
- Employ comprehensible grammar in writing simple sentences and paragraphs.
- Read and comprehend basic information, short articles and simple written selections.
- Identify geographical locations where Chinese is spoken and the various aspects of Chinese culture.
