FRE 111 – French Language I – 5 credits

  • No Prerequisite: This is a beginner class.
  • Required Materials: HORIZONS, 4th edition, by Manley & Smith (Heinle Cengage Learning Publ.) packaged with audio CDs, and QUIA Online Workbook/Lab Manual.

  • Course Objectives:
  1. To provide the student with the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge of French grammar and syntax.
  2. To provide practice in basic aural, oral, reading and writing
  3. To provide practice in simple translations (English/French – French/English).
  4. To provide the opportunity to learn about the culture of French speaking countries and their relationship to the American culture and to the world.
  • Student Competencies: Upon completion of this course, the student at the novice level should be able to:
  1. Reproduce comprehensibly the pronunciation and intonation of French.
  2. Understand basic oral statements, instructions and questions.
  3. Apply accurately vocabulary and learned phrases in simple oral expressions.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary and grammar in basic conversations.
  5. Employ comprehensible grammar in writing simple sentences and paragraphs.
  6. Read and comprehend basic information, short articles and literary selections.
  7. Identify geographical locations where French is spoken and the various aspects of French culture.
