Sewing for Beginners or as a Refresher

Is your sewing machine gathering dust because you don’t remember how to use it or you never really learned how? Learn the basics, using a pattern, selecting appropriate material, and constructing an easy project. Bring your machine, enthusiasm and the required equipment. A materials list will be mailed to you or distributed at class.

More Basic Sewing

Now that you know your sewing machine won’t bite; want to learn more? Want to find out what this attachment can do? Where/how can a zig zag stitch be used? Are you interested in learning to insert a zipper and trim? A prerequisite to getting these and more questions answered is that you must have completed a Beginning Sewing Class. Bring enthusiasm, curiosity, sewing machine and basket to class. The selected pattern number and material list will be provided one week prior to class start date. Class size is limited.

“ Hook on” as a beginner or “wanna-be” expert. Gain tips, knowledge and crochet creativity while you relax and meet new crochet friends. Practice yarns and crochet hooks are provided for first-timers or bring your own special project. Left-handers are welcome.
Shelly Stephens has taught men and women to initiate and perfect this traditional craft.

Brazilian Embroidery: “Ima L. Teapot”
— Christine Hause
Create beautiful three-dimensional Brazilian Embroidery. Use a variety of rayon threads to add stunning color to the small piece (8”round) we will work on. The stitches are easy and fun to learn and include stem, couching, French knots, bullions, cast-ons, knotted lazy daisy and detached buttonhole. These realistic flowers and foliage look like they are growing on your fabric! Kit will provide everything you need to get started, including beads and specialty threads. Bring small 6” embroidery hoop and scissors. Check out the picture on the ACC non-credit courses website!
Christine Hause is an award winning and certified Brazilian Embroidery instructor.

CHILDREN’S BOOKS
How to Write for Children and Young Adults
— Denise Vega
Have you written a picture book or novel for children or do you have an idea for one? Are you wondering how to get started writing or whether what you’ve written could get published as a book or in a children’s magazine? In this workshop with award-winning children’s and young adult book author, Denise Vega, learn to improve your manuscript by looking at character and plot, ask key questions to determine if your manuscript is ready to submit to publishers or magazines, understand publishing terminology, explore the types of children’s books out there and where yours fits, how to prepare and submit a professionally formatted manuscript to publishers, what you can expect financially, whether you need an agent, and more.
Denise Vega is a published, award-winning author and the Co-Regional Advisor for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. She has presented this and other sessions numerous times at RMC-SCBWI conferences, libraries, CCIRA conferences, the Colorado Teen Literature Conference, and more. Her books include: CLICK HERE (To Find Out How I Survived Seventh Grade) -a Colorado Book Award winner and bestseller for Scholastic Book Clubs, published by Little, Brown. Several other books will be available within the next year including Fact Of Life #31, Grandmother, Grandmother, Have The Angels Come?, and Build A Burrito. Denise has published articles, short stories, and poems in both the children’s and adult markets.

Writing and Illustrating Children’s Books
Michael and Caroline Carroll
Wear your writing hat and your painting clothes as you explore the adventure of writing and illustrating children’s books. The first classes will be devoted to the tricks of writing for kids, both fiction and nonfiction. During the last part of the course, you will focus on how to illustrate and work with the artistic side of the industry. Michael and Caroline Carroll have collectively written and illustrated nearly twenty children’s books for publishers such as Tyndale, Zondervan, Charlesbridge and others. Caroline is a children’s librarian at Columbine Public Library, with a background in Occupational Therapy and women’s ministries through various churches. Mike has illustrated magazines including National Geographic, Smithsonian, Popular Science, and Odyssey, and has written for Clubhouse, Astronomy and others. Caroline paints in watercolor, while Mike uses acrylics.
