Writing and Illustrating Children’s Books

Come explore the adventure of writing and illustrating children’s books, from finding the right publisher to writing a good proposal to making your story sing. Find out how to work with artists if you are a writer, and how to work with writers if you are an artist. Receive a wide range of handouts, and enjoy a few surprise guest speakers! Discover how to link up with the publishing industry from these two experts.

Michael and Caroline Carroll have collectively written and illustrated nearly twenty children’s books for publishers such as Tyndale, Zondervan, Charlesbridge and others. Caroline is a children’s librarian at Columbine Public Library, with a background in Occupational Therapy and women’s ministries through various churches. Mike has illustrated magazines including National Geographic, Smithsonian, Popular Science, and Odyssey, and has written for Clubhouse, Astronomy and others.

How to Write for Children and Young Adults
— Denise Vega
Are you working on a picture book or novel for children or young adults or do you have an idea for one? In this workshop with award-winning children and young adult book author Denise Vega, evaluate what is currently published, understand picture book and novel structure, analyze existing works, and explore various writing techniques such as “show don’t tell.” If you have something you’re working on, bring it! The majority of this workshop focuses on good writing techniques for both picture books and novels, with some time at the end to discuss how to submit a manuscript for possible publication and other “getting published” topics. Note that this course does not cover self-publishing.
