How to Support an Arapahoe Community College Student
Welcome to Arapahoe Community College (ACC)! This is a big step for you and your student. By providing support during this time, you are building a lasting relationship that will carry over for years to come. At ACC, we encourage students to be self advocates and information seekers. We believe this self-advocacy transfers in to life skills and maturity that will reward your student in all aspects of life. We hope you support your student in seeking his/her own solutions.
Here are some pointers for how to help your student:
- Be supportive of your student. Listen, ask questions and discuss issues. Your student may be in college and independent, but he/she still needs your support and encouragement.
- Encourage your student to seek out student resources such as the Student Success Center, Advising, Career Center and the Mentoring Program.
- Ask questions! Let your student know to never be afraid of asking questions. Ask questions for more information in class, in student services and in life.
- Get involved! Encourage your student to get involved in student activities, clubs and peer groups.
- Learn about ACC regulations, expectations and program/degree requirements. Make sure your student has an ACC catalog and curriculum sheets. Help your student track his/her progress.
- Advise your student to activate his/her ACC student e-mail address. ACC sends notices about upcoming events, deadlines and closures.
- Remind your student that class grades are on his/her permanent college transcript. One grade may affect scholarship awards, entrance into other colleges and employment.
Did you know?
- FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) states that ACC cannot provide specific account information or make account adjustments without your student’s written consent. If you call ACC, we can only supply directory (enrollment status and graduation information) or general process information . . . this time, we need a note from the student.
- Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989. ACC complies with this law.
- Safety on Campus. ACC has armed police force that patrols buildings and campus parking lots, emergency loudspeakers, e-mail communication and phone calls.
