First Hand: An ACC Student’s Experience – by Kathy Ewton – ACC graduate
“I know that I’ve been given a solid foundation of education that I can continue to build upon.”
Stepping onto the college campus for the first time seemed like an intimidating experience. Here I was, my first day of college…but I was not 18 years old, I passed that age long ago! I remember sitting down at my desk on the first day of class and turned to the young lady seated next to me and asked: “I’m sorry, but could you show me how to turn on this computer?” Yes, this would be challenging.
Through the years I had taken odd jobs here and there, finding that without a college education, doors closed left and right for me. Even worse, I increasingly felt that I was a poor role model for my five children. This was certainly not the life I wanted for them, so I asked myself: why then was it alright for me?
When I first visited the campus, I was amazed to see that I was not the only adult returning to school. It was a welcome sight and made my experience more relaxed. I expected everyone to be in a rush, so when someone in the Financial Aid Department took the time to sit down with me and help me work out a financial plan (including a Foundation Scholarship) that would allow me to attend the school, I was ecstatic! I applied that day. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to complete their first two years of college.
The instructors at ACC are definitely what I like best about the college. They are all highly qualified and never fail to inspire me on a daily basis. I know that I have been given a solid foundation of education that I can continue to build upon.
I will miss the friendly and helpful staff at ACC but believe that I could not have received a better education elsewhere. One last note to mention: I am pleased to say that not only did I learn how to turn on a computer after my first day of class, but also learned how to use Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, Westlaw, Apollo, Sabre, QuickBooks, and can navigate the internet like a pro!
Kathy was a recipient of the Dr. Karen Cline-Lane Memorial Scholarship and the ACC General Scholarship. She is currently attending Metro State College and is pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice and maintains a 4.0 GPA. She is planning to attend law school after graduating.
